Knowing when to
replace your roof can be a difficult call to make for Minneapolis homeowners. A new roof installation can be costly, and most people have not budgeted over the years for such a repair. So how do you know when it’s time to shell out the cash for a new roof?
Schoenfelder Renovations, a trusted
roofing contractor, wants to pass along Angie’s Lists’s five signs that it’s time to call a roofing professional (check out
Angie’s List for the full list).
1. Your roof is more than 20-25 years old.
If you know the age of your roof, and it’s been more than a quarter of a century, it’s probably a good time to call a
roofing contractor to get your roof assessed.
eHow notes that “Homeowners can expect wood roofs to last 25 years, on average.”
2. You’re missing shingles.
Whether you recently had a nasty storm or slowly your roof’s shingles have disappeared over the years, you don’t want to leave your roof exposed due to missing shingles. If you aren’t able to replace the shingles, you may want to consider a complete roof replacement.
Angie’s List notes that missing shingles could indicate that “your roof could be failing.”
3. The shingles are buckling or curling.
This one is easy: If a considerable number of shingles are curling, you may need a new roof. If your shingles or the
roof installation are still under warranty, call your roofing contractor.
4. Granules appear in your gutters or on your lawn.
After a good rain, check your gutters or downspouts. If you notice a good amount of shingle granules, this could be a sign that your roof is beginning to show its age (or its defectiveness).
5. You can see daylight through your roof boards.
If you can go up in your attic, pay attention to any areas where daylight is coming in. The combination of daylight coming in (not a great sign) and moisture on your attic floor or in the insulation could mean your roof needs replaced.
